⛽️ Kenya now has some of the highest fuel prices in East Africa and many Kenyans are asking how neighboring countries with fewer resources are paying less at the pump.

As of May 2026, fuel prices in Nairobi hit:

• Petrol KSh 214.25 per litre

• Diesel KSh 242.92 per litre

Meanwhile, countries like Uganda, Tanzania, and Ethiopia continue to post lower prices despite depending on the same regional fuel supply routes.

The sharp increases have already triggered protests, transport strikes, and rising food and transport costs across Kenya.

Reuters reports that recent hikes were linked to global crude oil disruptions and Middle East tensions, but many citizens argue taxes and levies are making the burden worse locally. On social media, frustration is boiling over:>

“Our fuel prices are the highest in Eastern Africa.” Fuel affects everything transport, food, biashara, and daily survival.

When fuel goes up, the cost of living follows immediately.
